“All jeans fit me perfectly,” said no woman, ever. But when you’re petite (as in, 5’3” and under), there’s a very specific set of challenges. The knee is never in the right place. A zipper hits you centimeters below your boobs. And if you’re going for a wide-leg look, you can easily end up passing for a circus clown. That’s why I’ve watched denim trends in recent years with mild trepidation. As waistlines crept higher and roominess ballooned from thigh-cinchingly skinny to zoot-suit-style bagginess, I had to wonder: What would this mean for my shrimpy frame?

Fellow shorties, I’m pleased to report we can participate in the wide-leg jean trend, as long as we adhere to a few simple rules. (Most notably, make purchases in the petites department.) Here are three pairs that decidedly work if you’re vertically challenged.

1. Madewell Petite Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Jean

What I Like

  • 99 percent cotton gives a structured, expensive look
  • good for tucking
  • 27.5-inch inseam

What I Don't Like

  • butt is baggy on smaller rears
  • denim too heavy for summer

Madewell

Since I got them six months ago, these guys have become my wardrobe workhorse: I can wear them dressed up with a blouse and blazer or dressed down with a slouchy sweater or tank top. But mostly what I love is how structured they look and feel. The 99 percent cotton material makes them fit like old-fashioned chunky denim, with a generous tummy area good for tucking shirts into. And the 27.5-inch inseam means they hit just above the heel, making them great for any shoe height. One word of warning: Some of the washes have more elastic than others, so make sure you check before you buy.

2. Quince Bella Stretch Patch Pocket Wide

What I Like

  • inexpensive price point
  • 26-inch inseam
  • soft cotton and stretch makes for extreme comfort

What I Don't Like

  • some washes are less than 60 percent cotton
  • thin material can be cold in winter

Quince

I’ve written before about my love affair with Quince for budget-friendly wardrobe basics, and while you’ll have to pry my skinnies off my cold, dead body, I’m also pretty taken with this wide-leg option, which features smart front pockets and the shortest inseam I’ve seen in the wide-leg market, making them ideal for pairing with tennis shoes and loafers. But the main selling point is comfort. Because these jeans are loose, light and crafted from a cotton-polyester blend, they have the feel of athleisure with the look of a ‘70s-inspired trouser. And at $50 a pop, you can feel good about owning in multiple colorways.

3. AYR The Secret Sauce

What I Like

  • 99 percent cotton means they can withstand countless washes
  • curve-hugging and snug in the hips and thighs
  • 20” leg opening gives a dramatic, trendy flare

What IDon't Like

  • tight in the waist
  • 29.5 inch inseam may be too long for some petites

AYR

There’s quality denim and then there’s quality denim, and AYR is one of those U.S.-made brands that is built to last (and has some name cache if you care about that type of thing). I’ve historically considered myself too small for their glamazon offerings, but thanks to new shorter inseams, I’m thrilled to say I can get in on the party. The Secret Sauce (which comes in five different washes) is a work-ready pant with a slender, hip-hugging upper and super-wide bottom that flares at the knee, for a look that’s begging to be worn with strappy heels and cropped blazers. With a 29.5 “short” inseam, they’re almost too long for me, but since I only wear them with heels, I appreciate their modern, just-grazing-the-floor vibe. I also bought them true to size and found the waist very tight—not uncomfortable per se, just not roomy enough for Thanksgiving dinner. Bottom line: These aren’t the pants I wear to the grocery store; they are the ones I wriggle into for date night.
