Now that summer’s in full swing, it’s only a matter of time before someone suggests drinks on the patio or an impromptu backyard dinner party. But while outdoor lighting and a decent citronella candle are nice to have, nothing makes people want to linger longer than furniture that’s actually comfortable (or at least not rusted to the point where you need a post-fête Tetanus shot).

That’s why our editors have been busy testing outdoor furniture sets that’ll actually hold up—evaluating everything from comfort and cleanability to how well a bench wears after a Fourth of July fireworks fallout. Below, you’ll find the five standout pieces we keep coming back to, from Walmart sofas that defy expectations to a compact Amazon bistro set that folds flat but still fits two dinner plates and a pitcher of sangria.

“I am shocked by the quality of Walmart’s Better Homes and Gardens Astrid set,” says our VP of Editorial, Candace Davison, who tested it after a summer disaster with a pricier wooden option that “cracked halfway through.” This one? “Sturdy and has withstood nonstop storms, bird poop, waves of pollen and kids pretending to be pro wrestlers on it and still looks pristine.” The frame is actually steel made to look like wood, with a yellowish, natural finish that gives it a warm, Scandinavian look.

The five-piece set includes one sofa, two armchairs, one coffee table and one side table—all with rust-resistant, powder-coated steel frames and all-season fabric cushions. “The cushions are ultra-thick and plush, and they hold their shape,” Candace adds. Not to mention that Senior Editor Dana Dickey seconds the appeal, noting, “The wood-grain finish on metal is just so much lighter yet more durable than wood, IMHO.” At $744, it’s a surprisingly chic and sturdy investment that looks far more expensive than it is.

Executive Editor Dara Katz has had this AllModern dining set since 2019—and after five years of heavy use, it’s still going strong. “It can take a beating!” she says. Originally placed on a fourth-story walk-up roof deck, it survived everything from “crazy winter storms and firework residue to bird poop and UV.” Now that it’s been moved to a covered porch, “it’s living a quieter life, but it still feels good as new.” She adds, “It’s hearty enough to not blow away, but it’s not too cumbersome that you can’t move it around if you want to.”

The six-person set includes one aluminum-framed dining table and two matching benches, all powder-coated and topped with planked recycled plastic lumber that mimics the look of wood. The benches neatly tuck underneath the table for space-saving storage, and while there are no cushions included, the clean, modern lines make this a versatile pick for patios, rooftops and tiny terraces alike.

“Swivel patio chairs are a must for hanging out on sunny days,” says Davison. “Without having to get up and move your chair every time the sun shifts,” she explains, this $599 Amazon set is a dead ringer for the now-discontinued set that was her go-to for nearly four years. “It still looks great—despite a friend’s dog’s attempts to pee on it and gnaw the wicker.” The two wide chairs swivel easily but feel sturdy, and the set comes with a matching cocktail table topped with glass.

That said, while Davison wishes the cushions were a bit thicker, she says, “They’re just cushy enough AND are easy to clean. Just unzip the cover and toss 'em in the washing machine.” The combo of weather-resistant resin wicker and an aluminum frame means it can handle sun, rain and pets alike without fading or fraying. And thanks to its curved silhouette, it looks way more luxe than its sub-$650 price tag.

  • Materials: All-weather resin wicker, aluminum frame, removable zippered cushions (gray)

Executive Editor Alexia Dellner picked up this $105 Amazon bistro set for her deck and was “surprised at how durable it is and how chic it looks!” Designed for small spaces, the two folding chairs and round table easily tuck into tight corners but still hold up to daily use—rain or shine. “We have another outdoor furniture set that needs to be covered in the rain, and we’re terrible at remembering to do it…so I wanted something that could withstand the elements but also, you know, look cute.”

Made from rust-resistant, powder-coated steel, the set arrives fully assembled and folds flat for easy storage. “My husband and I have used this set for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks—it’s a great size and while it may not be as cozy as a lounge set, I can’t complain about comfort.” It’s available in seven colors—including classic black, sunny yellow, and mint green—so you can match it to your aesthetic, whether that’s urban balcony or garden party chic.

  • Materials: Powder-coated and E-coated steel (frame and tabletop)

“This is a little outside the box,” admits Dickey, “but I nominate this dining table as a piece of comfortable outdoor furniture”—and once you hear her reasoning, it makes total sense. Though only 69 inches long, the solid acacia wood table fits up to eight people for “lovely al fresco dining,” making it ideal for tight patios that still host big gatherings. Dickey adds, “I don’t bother to cover it, and the acacia wood has resisted rotting or fading, and the powder-coated legs are stable and haven’t pitted or scuffed.”

It’s also thoughtfully designed: “The 29.5-inch height means diners scoot all the way underneath, unlike too-low tables,” she explains. Finished in a raw, modern combo of wood slats and black metal, this $295 piece brings both form and function to the patio—especially if you already have your own mix-and-match chairs.
