So I'm thrilled to introduce these jetsetters' selections for best carry-on luggage for domestic and international trips.

Hardside cases with wheels, rolling soft zip luggage, tote bags and even an underseat mini case—it's all here. Top brands like Away and TravelPro are assessed, as well as the affordable-case-that-could from Amazon Basics. We didn't stop there though. This list also includes luggage with a range of special features, like expandable bodies, compression boards—there's even an aluminum model and another design with shelves. Read on for the editor-tested details and original photos of the 15 best carry-on luggage options to shop now.

Best Value Carry-On

1. Calpak Hue Carry-On Luggage

Pros

  • cushioned top handle
  • multiple interior pockets
  • compact size

Cons

  • no laptop sleeve

Calpak

PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint says the Calpak Hue carry-on is a great buy, since it's under $200 and has multiple pockets, comes in great colors and has durable wheels. "And one small thing I love about it is how rubbery the handles are," she says, "which makes it easier to lift when you have to put in an overhead compartment or hoist onto an escalator."

2. Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential Carry-On

Pros

  • expandable
  • built-in compression system
  • built-in garment folder

Cons

  • heavier than some other options
  • pricey

Briggs & Riley

Despite being on the pricier side, you won’t regret investing in this high-quality expandable carry-on from Briggs & Riley. CEO Ryan Harwood notes the bag has a ton of impressive features but says a few stand out above the rest: “The Baseline Expandable Carry-On has a compression expansion system that allows for extra packing room without sacrificing the carry-on size of the bag. The bag also includes a built-in garment folder, so if you’re traveling for business or simply have an outfit you don’t feel like pressing, you don’t have to worry about it becoming wrinkled while it’s packed. The carry-on is covered by their ‘simple as that’ guarantee, too, which means in the chance that damage happens along the way, they will repair it free of charge.” Consider me sold.

Best Shoulder Carry-On

3. Béis The Weekender Bag

Pros

  • sturdy
  • built-in laptop sleeve
  • bottom zippered compartment

Cons

  • can be heavy when full
  • no warranty

Béis

You’re likely no stranger to the Béis weekender, considering its racked up more than 68 million views on TikTok, but allow us to explain what makes this bag *so good.* Beyond its padded shoulder strap, built-in laptop bag and key lash that keeps your car keys from getting lost, PureWow's former wellness director Sarah Stiefvater calls out the bottom zipper compartment as the bag’s stand-out feature: “The opening of the bag is sturdy, with a wire frame built in that lets you prop it open to see everything inside. The real selling point, in my opinion, is the spacious zippered compartment at the bottom of the bag, which is perfect for storing shoes, toiletry bags or dirty laundry.” Steifvater even tested the bag on a trip that involved traveling to *three* different countries, so you know it holds up.

Best Budget Carry-On

4. Amazon Basics 21-Inch Hardside

Pros

  • fits into small overhead bins
  • spinners are smooth
  • comes in five happy colorways

Cons

  • ABS plastic can become brittle

Amazon Basics

"I have the Amazon Basics carry-on size and I love it," says PureWow VP, news and entertainment Phil Mutz. "The outer shell is surprisingly durable and the expandable option means it really does fit more than you'd expect. Also, it comes in cute colors so people are often surprised when they compliment my luggage and I say, 'It's Amazon!' The 21-inch size is perfect for fitting in the overhead compartment on a flight and fits all my stuff for a weekend away." That explains the more than 9,100 five-star reviews for a carry-on suitcase priced well under $100. That—as well as that most of the dozens of pieces—are available on two-day Prime shopping, so they get my vote as a great gift for family members and graduates who might need to begin or refresh their luggage collection.

Best Backpack

5. Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Backpack

What We Like

  • smooth back panel makes a nice pillow
  • dual-side compartments are roomy
  • great color choices

What We Don't Like

  • overpacked, it's heavy
  • rubbery material gets fingerprints

Cotopaxi

I'd admired this backpack on hip-looking travelers for years before I tried traveling with it myself, and now I get the allure. The appeal goes beyond just the immediately visible—the rainbow hues and smooth, pocketless back panel of the backpack (the better to avoid anyone rifling through your pack while you're wearing it). The unique value proposition is how the pack works—it unzips clamshell-style, like a suitcase, with left and right sides that have zippered mesh panels and small, medium and large pockets. There's a side zippered compartment that's padded for a laptop up to 15 inches, and an elastic water-bottle holder. And I'm glad I got the following tip from my 20-year-old stepson before I used it: The tuck-away waist strap is a must for comfort when you're walking for a while with the pack on, or standing in a long queue.

Best Luxury Carry-On

6. Sterling Pacific 40L Cabin Travel Case

Pros

  • super-sturdy
  • amenity case for care and cleaning
  • double combination latches

Cons

  • heavier than comparably sized carry-ons
  • no exterior pockets

Sterling Pacific

I've always wanted a metal suitcase, because they are not only dead glamorous, like something James Bond travels with, but also because they offer aeronautical-grade protection for my garments and purchases. This case has both good looks and sturdiness, as it's made from solid sheets of hydraulically pressed sheets of aluminum, with corners that are reinforced by heavier gauge aluminum that are fastened by steel bolts. While the case is about a third heavier than most plastic cases, you don't know it while you're rolling it because the metal-capped wheels maintain smooth 360-degree movement. The bag's interior is a rich-feeling brown ultrasuede, with pleasingly old-fashioned crossover straps on one side and a mesh zippered compartment on the other. It even comes with its own little cloth coat to protect it in your closet or garage—this case is the sturdy heirloom that's thought of everything.

Most Durable Carry-On

7. July Carry-On Pro

Pros

  • built-in power bank and laptop sleeve
  • durable shell
  • hidden laundry bag included

Cons

  • laptop sleeve can catch in narrow spaces

July

The July Carry-On Pro is particularly durable thanks to its hard shell, per Associate Sales and Deals Editor Destinee Scott. And this carry-on, though on the pricier side, truly does have it all. Scott shares: “I have the July Carry-On Pro [that offers tons of] bells and whistles, [like] a power bank and a laptop sleeve. I also [love the] polycarbonate shell—I'm never worried that it'll crack, and the handle has [multiple] adjustment heights.” We’re already sold, but in case you need more convincing, the carry-on pro also comes with a stain-proof laundry bag, is water-resistant *and* has a lifetime warranty.

Best Design Innovation

8. Monos Hybrid Carry-On

Pros

  • 360-degree wheels
  • no exterior zipper
  • water-resistant

Cons

  • on the heavy side
  • limited colorways

Monos

Looking for a sturdy bag with the latest modern design? The Monos Hybrid carry-on is associate commerce editor Natalie LaBarbera's go-to choice: "It has a totally sleek, unique look thanks to the fact that it's zipper-less on the outside," she says. "The hybrid design combines the best features of aluminum and polycarbonate luggage, creating a suitcase that's both durable and stylish." In her review, she details how the hybrid shell is water-resistant and has aluminum corner guards, an expandable handle, TSA-accepted locks, an anti-microbial lining and a built-in, removable compression pad. "I appreciated the extra pocket on the compression board for added organization," La Barbera said after using it on a Palm Springs getaway. "The only slight downside I found as a chronic over-packer is that it was a little harder to get fully closed than a traditional zipper design when I had it stuffed full—but I'm hoping this will encourage me to pack lighter in the future."

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 22 × 14 × 9 inches
  • Weight: 8.81 lbs
  • Material: water-resistant polycarbonate hard shell, anodized aluminum frame and corner guards
  • Wheel Type: high-performance 360-degree spinner wheels
  • Warranty: 100-day trial, lifetime limited warranty

Best Compression Carry-On

9. Away The Softside Carry-On

Pros

  • 1.75-inch expansion zipper
  • durable wheels
  • internal compression board

Cons

  • no exterior pocket

Away

With a sleek design and durable, lightweight construction, the Away Softside Carry-On is Editor in Chief Jillian Quint’s go-to. Quint raves: “I love, love, love how sleek and easy this guy is to get around an airport—[they’re] the only suitcase wheels I have ever encountered that don't get snagged on things, and I find the coordinating lock awfully convenient. My only complaint is that I miss having an exterior pocket to jam my book into when they finally call my boarding group." Beyond that, the carry-on also comes with a limited lifetime warranty, so you can travel stress-free (although we can’t do much about those delayed flights.)

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 21.9 by 15 inches by 9.1 inches
  • Weight: 9.2 lbs
  • Material: high-strength nylon
  • Wheel Type: four 360-degree spinning wheels
  • Warranty: limited lifetime warranty

Best-Looking Carry-On

10. Paravel Aviator Carry-On More

Pros

  • interior compression board
  • laundry bag included
  • durable
  • sustainable materials

Cons

  • not expandable

Paravel

Paravel’s Aviator roller has *tons* of functional features like an interior compression system, included laundry bag and scuff-hiding exterior. Add to that the fact that it’s the world’s first carbon-neutral carry-on made from sustainable materials. I have thoroughly tested its durability, too, and can confirm that it withstands even the most eventful trips. For instance, the Paravel Aviator wheels have withstood my teen son’s racing it over the uneven tarmac and other indignities, but it still glides smoothly. I have the Scout Tan colorway and, frankly, I was concerned that the off-white body and tan vegan leather insets would hold up. But after three years, it’s crisp looking after a brief wipe down post-travel.

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 13.7 inches by 21.7 inches by 9 inches
  • Weight: 8.2lbs
  • Material: recycled polycarbonate, recycled aluminum handles, recycled zippers, vegan leather, Negative Nylon lining
  • Wheel Type: four 360-degree spinning wheels
  • Warranty: 10 years

Best Lightweight Shoulder Bag

11. Calpak Gym Bag

Pros

  • multiple interior compartments
  • separate shoe compartment
  • pass-through trolley sleeve

Cons

  • mat straps can be hard to adjust on-the-fly

Calpak

This dual-purpose bag works not only as a gym bag, but also as a personal item carry-on. It's got a pass-through trolly strap to balance it atop your carry-on rolling bat, but if you want to hope on a plane for a long weekend with this bag alone, that's totally doable, too. There's a separate zip shoe compartment that fits a pair of flip-flops and a pair of heels, a large center area for folding clothes and lots of little interior pockets for toiletries. And the wipeable polyester is so lightweight and durable, it's not dragging you down. The side straps are made for a rolled yoga mat, but when I'm traveling with this tote I use the straps to hold a folded puffer jacket. And I love the side water bottle pocket, which reminds me to make sure I'm prepped for hydration in flight.

  • Weight: 1.5 lbs
  • Material: recycled polyester

Best Organized Carry-On

12. Royce & Rocket Castle Carry-On

Pros

  • built-in shelves
  • expandable
  • compression system

Cons

  • pricey

Royce & Rocket

I tested this impressive expandable carry-on that comes with built-in shelving for "ultimate organization." Royce and Rocket is a rolling carry-on that manages to be glamorous with its silky interior and innovative drop-down shelves that let you keep all your items visible without unpacking. It’s also expandable and features a built-in compression system, so you can fit more inside. I maneuvered it through multiple hotels and airports during a 10-day Hawaiian vacay and through it all, it maneuvered smoothly and quietly, too. That's due to the expertly-crafted Hinomoto Lisof Silent Run wheels that the family company's designers chose to roll over any obstacle.

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 21 inches by 14 inches by 9 to 11 inches
  • Weight: 8.5lbs
  • Material: polycarbonate
  • Wheel Type: four Hinomoto Lisof silent run 360-degree wheels
  • Warranty: lifetime

Best Laptop Carry-On

13. Monos Backpack

Pros

  • built-in laptop compartment
  • water-resistant
  • detachable front Metro Kit

Cons

  • can feel heavy when fully packed

Monos

LaBarbera also loves this sleek and functional backpack from Monos as a smaller carry-on option. She explains: “I’m so obsessed with the design of the Monos Metro backpack. The attachable Metro Kit on the front is one of the best parts, because I can use it as a clutch and don’t have to worry about packing another bag inside. Plus, as someone who’s a total germaphobe when it comes to travel, I love that the water-resistant vegan leather can be wiped clean. Not to mention, the separate laptop pocket is a huge plus because I don’t have to go digging through the rest of my stuff, likely dropping things in the process, if I need to get it out. It can get a bit heavy if I stuff it full, but that’s been the same with every other backpack I’ve tried.” The bag comes in a plethora of colors, too, and you can choose from either vegan leather or nylon for its main fabric.

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 11.5 × 16.5 × 6 inches
  • Weight: 3 lbs
  • Material: vegan leather with cotton twill lining
  • Wheel Type: none
  • Warranty: two-year limited warranty

Best Mini Rolling Carry-On

14. Calpak Ambeur Mini Carry-On

What We Like

  • cushioned top handle
  • multiple interior pockets
  • compact size

What We Don't Like

  • no laptop sleeve

Calpak

This mini rolling carry-on, another fave of LaBarbera's, packs tons of features into its small size, making it ideal for weekend trips or alongside a larger checked bag. LaBarbera shares: “I really like these more compact carry-ons for when I’m traveling with my dog and need to put his carrying bag on my shoulder and don’t want anything else strapped to me. This style is one of my more recent favorites because I love how much the metallic color stands out and matches with my other luggage. Plus, it has so many pockets inside, so organizing is a breeze (though I do wish there was a padded area for my laptop). The top handle is also cushioned underneath, which is such a nice touch for when I’m hauling it up.”

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 6 x 14 x 8.5 inches
  • Weight: 6 lbs
  • Material: polycarbonate shell
  • Wheel Type: 360-degree spinner wheels
  • Warranty: 2-year limited Calpak warranty

Best Wheeled Carry-On

15. TravelPro Versapack

What We Like

  • removable compression cubes
  • removable shoe bags and laundry bag
  • TSA compliant lock

What We Don't Like

  • zippered lid pocket, compression cubes tricky at first

TravelPro

I'm currently loving my trim little Travelpro Versapack carry-on for its stain-resistant nylon body that repels water, resists stains and didn't puncture when I dropped a pair of nail nippers point-down on it. When I researched this model for my review of it, I discovered this rolling carry-on is the latest design from the travel professionals who first innovated wheeled luggage back in the day. Travelpro is still bringing the fresh angles, like in the way the brand designed the expansion zip to pooch out at the base a little further than the top, so the suitcase won't tip over. Also in the way the compression board and two packing cubes attach, which was too complicated for me to figure out when I was late to the airport but later mastered. Basically, this bag is too smart and well-traveled for me, but I love taking it along just the same.

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches
  • Weight: 7.7 lbs
  • Material: high-density ballistic nylon fabric, interior lining with H2O guard is made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles
  • Wheel Type: eight 360 degree self-aligning spinner wheels
  • Warranty: lifetime limited warranty

What to Consider When Shopping for Carry-On Luggage

  • Size: Each domestic carrier makes its own rules about the dimensions they accept for on-board luggage, but generally, they require that a bag’s dimensions be no more than 45 inches total—most commonly, 22 inches tall x 14 inches wide x 9 inches deep. (There are exceptions, including Frontier Airlines, which requires that carry-on bags stay under 40 inches combined.) Internationally, a number of major airlines such as Air France, ask that luggage be no more than 21 inches tall, and total less than 45 inches combined (Air France’s combined measurements are 43 inches). Exceptions abound, so check with your airline before boarding. And remember, expandable carry-on luggage pieces are great…until you realize that once you stuff all your new purchases in your bag its dimensions no longer fit within airline parameters.
  • Four Wheels or Two: Two-wheeled luggage pieces used to be the gold standard in rolling luggage, since the two parallel wheels allowed you to pull the case behind you, yet the non-wheeled front corners of the bag let it stand obediently in place when parked. Four-wheeled suitcases, known as spinner luggage, allow the bag to be pushed alongside you. According to Travelpro, the luggage manufacturer founded by a former pilot who patented a two-wheeled suitcase in the early 1990s and now sells spinner luggage, deciding between the two types depends on your needs. Two-wheeled luggage allows for greater speed, since you can really make time running across a concourse with it gliding behind you; spinner luggage, on the other hand, gives users greater agility, since its four externally-mounted wheels have 360-degree motion and easily stop and start as you weave your way through a crowded gate.
  • Hard-Sided or Soft: Hard-sided luggage is typically made of injection-molded plastic in bright colors and finishes, while soft-sided cases are made of durable fabrics with external pockets. Hard cases are usually designed as two clamshell halves that bind together using a zipper in the middle, while soft cases are generally a single chamber that’s opened using a zipper on one end. Are you a person who usually packs over a bag’s capacity, then sits on the suitcase to get it to close? If so, you might want to opt for a soft case, since they have more “give” than a hard-shell case. Conversely, do you like the secure feeling of your suitcase contents being ding-proof under a hard surface? Then go for the molded plastic.
  •  Warranty: Do you want to invest in a bag that’s going to last you next-to-forever or do you like to swap in a fresher model every few years? If you’re the former, then opt for one of the brands that offer longer warranties. They’re a little pricier, but you’ll know your investment is covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Size is a TSA-Approved Carry-On?

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), approved carry-on sizes vary by aircraft carrier. A few of the maximum carry-on sizes of popular airlines include:

  • United: 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches
  • Allegiant: 22 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches
  • American Airlines: 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches
  • Delta: 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches
  • JetBlue: 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches
  • Southwest: 24 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches
  • Spirit: 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches

Is There a Weight Limit for Carry-On Luggage?

For most carry-on luggage, no maximum weight applies, except in specific locations, so it’s best to check with your airline for confirmation before you travel.

What Does TSA Allow in a Carry-On Bag?

If you’re questioning a specific item you want to pack, you can search for it in the TSA’s comprehensive “What Can I Bring?” list, which displays the rules for tons of items you may consider packing. However, some standouts include:

  • Liquids: TSA allows one quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes per carry-on bag, however the products in the bag must not exceed 3.4 ounces each. (This also applies to beauty products!)
  • Food: While food is generally allowed by TSA in your carry-on luggage, some foods such as breast milk, canned items and fresh fruits and vegetables may require special instructions, so be sure to refer to the “What Can I Bring?” list or contact your airline for guidance.

Is Hard or Soft Luggage Better as a Carry-On?

It really comes down to your personal preference on whether to choose a hardside or softside carry-on. However, Béis points out a few important differences to keep in mind:

  • Protection: If you travel with fragile items like a laptop, tablet or delicate souvenirs, it may be beneficial to opt for a hardside carry-on, which doesn’t squish down as easily as softside options, giving your items a bit of extra protection and keeping them from being smashed in transit.
  • Cleaning: Generally, hardside luggage is easier to wipe down and, because it’s less porous, it’s less likely to absorb water and trap smells or mold.
  • Accessibility: Softside luggage may be easier to access quickly if you need to grab something out of it, since hardside luggage often needs to be fully opened to take anything out (though, this could be avoided if you choose a hardside carry-on with a front pocket).
