I’m an astrology devotee with friends and lovers all over the charts. And as a creative air sign Gemini, I’m no stranger to certain signs being delulu. One of my besties, for example, is a Pisces, and he’s really out there sometimes in terms of having one foot (fin?) on the planet and the other in the clouds. Having been the toast of downtown Manhattan, he’s an attractive, magnetic social creature and is my favorite conversation partner on all things from musical theatre to the work of Nicole Kidman. But—whereas I’ll zone out in the endless career and home grind, he’s following his nose toward his passions, sometimes at the expense of mundanities like future planning. And while I’m sometimes overly fixated on insecurity, he’s setting standards beneath which he refuses to compromise. Over the years, my Pisces pool buddy (he does love a sunny resort, as do I) and I have sparred about, shared and ultimately compromised on the way to lead a life—with me coming to understand his focus on entertainment is certainly as valid as my boring TikTok finfluencer follows. And to his credit, I’ve seen my Pisces bestie really step up in terms of family and friend caregiving—which shows me that if I too engage in a little magical thinking, too, I won’t just forget what (and who) is important in life.
